Homeowner's Guide to Basement Finish Permits

Building permits are required for a basement finish when any walls are being built, moved or altered and/or a change of use in the proposed area (Including: installing gypsum board on walls and/or ceiling). Separate trade permits are required if electrical, mechanical and associated ductwork, fireplace, plumbing or gas piping work is being performed. A basement finish shall meet the requirements of the 2020 Minnesota State Building Code which adopts and amends the 2018 International Residential Code. For more information on basement projects, visit our Homeowner's Guide to Basement Finish Permits Webpage.
