Artist Anne Labovitz reprises Art Center exhibit in downtown art plaza display

Category: 311 Rochester

July 19, 2024 – ROCHESTER, MINN. – A recent Rochester Art Center exhibit, “Will to Meaning,” by Minnesota visual artist Anne Labovitz, is being reprised in a new setting. Selections from the work are now installed in six light boxes along the art plaza, which forms the east façade of Parking Ramp 6 in downtown Rochester.

With the exhibit at the Art Center coming to a close the decision was made to repurpose excerpts of the larger work to update the art plaza display. The work, painted onto Tyvek (a semitransparent material), was not only the correct material for a lightbox application but was also the correct dimension to fit the height of the six large fixtures.

Artist Anne Labovitz shares, “I conceive these works with light as a medium. They manifest the ideas of health, metaphorically emphasizing brightness as opposed to darkness. The works transform when they are illuminated and the underpainting (the Tyvek® is painted on both sides) becomes observable.”

In addition to the exhibit, the artist has ties to Rochester, having recently been a plenary speaker for the Mayo Clinic 2023 Conference on Brain Health and Dementia - Paths to Emotional Wellness and her work is part of Mayo Clinic's permanent art collection. The Ramp 6 installation is the artist’s first outdoor display of original artwork.

Labovitz continues, “I love Rochester and the Rochester Art Center; I feel fortunate to have made many friends here. The river is lovely, and the downtown area is vibrant and welcoming”

The Art Plaza is located along 1st Avenue SW between Center Street and 1st Street SE. Visit the display to learn more about the artist and the installation, which is expected to be in place through 2026. The Ramp 6 Art Plaza previously held an exhibit of works by Rochester artist Tiffany Alexandria.
