Southbound Highway 63 lane, exit ramp closed for maintenance Aug. 20 in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Motorists on southbound Highway 63 in south Rochester will encounter a closed right lane and exit ramp as they approach 40th Street Southwest on Aug. 20 while Minnesota Department of Transportation crews complete maintenance work.

Crews will be doing crack sealing and other maintenance from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The right traveling lane is expected to open by midday and crews will complete their work on the ramp, opening it after completion by 4:30 p.m.

People wanting to use the Highway 63 southbound 40th Street Southwest exit can detour to the 48th Street exit to the south, cross the highway and use Highway 63 northbound to exit at 48th Street Southeast, while the maintenance work is occurring.

Safety in work zones

Motorists should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment, and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers must:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Do the zipper merge.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
