Is Sidewalk Chalk use allowed in Rochester MN?

The use of water-soluble chalk (sidewalk chalk) is allowed.

The following products are not allowed:

  • Markers
  • Paints
  • Oil-based Products
  • Non-Soluble Products

The use of sidewalk chalk is allowed on horizontal surfaces where rain or natural elements will wash it off.

The use of sidewalk chalk is not allowed:

  • On Vertical Surfaces (buildings, walls, doors, poles, columns)
  • Planters
  • Trash Receptacles
  • Steps
  • Benches
  • Tables
  • Signs
  • Bus Stops
  • Light Posts
  • Trees

The use of sidewalk chalk for political solicitation and advertising is prohibited. 

The use of sidewalk chalk for commercial solicitation, advertising and sales are prohibited without a proper permit.
